Mrs. Irani
Mukharjee, since childhood, grew up with dogs and she pledged
herself to dedicate her entire life for welfare of animals.
She and her husband started off with very little money and
almost no help.
She
began tending animals at her home and later started moving
them to a makeshift clinic, but that wasn't enough.
Moreover, she felt single-handed, as she had to take care of every activity. She appealed
to the members to help her in possible ways. Her extreme love
and devotion for animals has enabled the society to establish
three shelters for which she had to even sell off some of her
property. Most of the dogs when brought here were acutely sick
and are now recuperating and healthy.

What is ABC (Animal Birth Control) ?
Sterilization, meaning Animal Birth Control, has become an
integral part of animal welfare activity. Time has come that the
dog population should be minimized as much as possible, not only
to reduce their sufferings but also to bring relief to those who
see dogs as nuisance. Our practical understanding of the
locality developed out of the experience gathered thorough doing
animal welfare activity over the years and close interaction
with the residents reveal that CAL needs to start a massive
awareness drive to make people aware of ABC programme and
Anti-Rabies Drive. In general people have a poor understanding
about the programmes. Many people are not even aware of ABC
programme. We have to make them aware of it so that when we
carry the programme they come up supporting us or at least not
raise objections to our working on ABC and Anti-Rabies. So an
awareness drive needs to be carried out in a massive scale.
